Part 2: Welded Joint Type and Quality
In last month’s newsletter, we defined joint efficiency by beginning with a discussion of the CATEGORY of welded joint. Let’s now take a look at the TYPE of welded joint. This means the geometry and the method of making the joint.
Although there are six TYPES of welded joints, we shall concern ourselves with just the first three. They are illustrated here:
Type 1 Joint
Welded from both sides, or
Welded with a removable backing strip.
Type 2 Joint
Welded with a backing strip that cannot be removed. The strip is fused to the shell.
